Digestive health is intrinsically linked to overall health.
A poorly functioning digestive system can have impacts on many areas of the body, causing daily suffering and possible triggers for disease.
Various aspects of the digestive system can be unbalanced due to lifestyle and environmental reasons. Once one element is out of balance, this can have a domino effect on others.
On the flip side, if we find and resolve the underlying cause, it can be a positive domino effect back to health!
For example, an unbalanced gut flora (bacteria) from antibiotics/parasite/poor diet, can make the gut more susceptible to an increase in pathogenic bacteria, fungi (e.g. candida) and viruses (e.g. Epstein Barr). This may lead to inflammation, poor immune response and perhaps leaky gut, a precursor to autoimmune disease.
Classic symptoms of poor digestive health:
- Abdominal pain
- Constipation / diarrhoea
- Feeling of fullness
- Excessive flatulence / burping
- Pale stools (possible fat malabsorption)
- Bad breath
Less obvious symptoms of poor digestive health:
- High oestrogen
- Cognitive issues
- Low mood
- Aching joints
How I can help
A medical case history will give me a good idea of what may be going on in your body which triggered and is continuing to drive your symptoms.
In some cases, tests are really helpful to give additional information. A stool test can show:
Pathogens e.g. E coli, campylobacter, norovirus, salmonella.
Bacteria: what and how much, normal, opportunistic.
Fungi (e.g. candida) and viruses.
Parasites and worms.
Health markers e.g. leaky gut, fat absorption, immune layer
(IgA), hidden blood, inflammation etc.
H Pylori overgrowth
Markers for coeliac disease.
Its possible for something to be ‘lurking’ in the gut from years ago; this can impact the delicate balance of the system. If we find and eliminate this, symptoms should correct.
I use labs such as Invivo or Genova for testing.
Once we have sufficient information to form a good idea of the issue I will put together a plan to target this.
A plan includes dietary and lifestyle advice, possible supplements, recipe ideas and resources and toxin reduction advice where relevant.
